How did the law of multiple properties encourage Dalton to introduce an atomic theory?
Ans :
Dalton had studied various compounds produced by the combination of two different elements in which weight of one of the element was kept constant. In all those examples, Dalton had found that the weight ratio of the element is always whole number multiple ratio. This whole number multiple ratio is due to repeation of the atoms of the same element. In CO and CO2 the number of C atoms remains constant but the number of oxygen atoms in CO2 are twice than the number of oxygen atoms in CO. Due to reoccurrence of the atoms of the same element, the weight ratio is multiple. On this basis Dalton has concluded that atom is the smallest repeating unit of an element the weight ratio is multiple. On the basis Dalton has concluded that atom is the smallest repeating unit of an element. Hence we can say that the law of multiple proportion has encouraged Dalton to give his atomic theory.
The law of multiple proportion cannot be followed by majority of organic compounds. So, such type of compounds are called non-stoichiometric compounds.
