The short story ' The treasure of the forest ' is written by H.G wells. He is English novelist, journalist, sociologist and historian, best known for such science fiction novels. The story is taken from the collection ' the country of the Blind and other short stories'.
The treasure in the forest is an ominous adventure story in which two men search for Spanish treasure, letting greed get the better of their awareness. As the story moves ahead to show how power and greed corrupt human beings.
The story is started as the two man i.e. Evan and Hooker, were going to the Deep forest in the boat on the way of sea. They had a map of treasure in the forest. They were carving paddle by changing each other. They seem very tired and in hurry. They were coming there without any preparation.
When Hooker was carving the paddle, Evan showed that there is reef and there is gap. He ran his thumbnail over the chart. Evan said "this curved and twisting line is river." And then he wish to drink water there. And he clearified that this star is the treasure place. They came to know that there was clump of plam-trees. And there were little marks in map's bottom. But they ignored that. They both sat for some minustes staring at the land, while the canoe drifted slowly. The Evan asked Hooker to carve the paddle.
When they move on Evan start sleeping with half closed eye. Finally when he sleep completely he began to saw the dream. There was a night time and they were in the bush. They were listining the talk of three china man who were discussing about the treasure. The leader of China man i.e chang-hi said that he found it on the sheep of Spain which was destroyed near the forest. He bured it on a bush near the clump of palm-trees.
Then they killed three china china man and took the map. They move to the forest as fast as possible without any preparation. Then Evan listen the sound Evan, Evan. Hook had called him. Now he awoke from his dream. But it was the real incident held before they were seen in the boat.
Finally they found the place of treasure. It was located on the middle of palm trees. There was a bush over it. But suddenly their sight goes to the dead body near that bush. They examinated it by going more close. They were shocked that the dead body was of chang-hi i.e the leader of three china man.
They feel ashamed for a while. Specially Hook is totally puzzled. But Evan comsider it as all of China Man are alike. But Hook was not believing that. He was just looking to China man. Evan went to the bust, it was half digged. He was shocked. But when he dig more he found the treasure box. Then suddenly he was injured by the small thorn. He threw it and he open the treassury box and found golden ingots. Evan said to hook that he must be killed by some poisonus snake. He took his jacket off and spread it on the ground and flung two or three ingots into it. Presently he fount that another little thorn had punctured his skin.
Then he packed the coat and siad to Hooker to leave. But Hooker said to buried the dead body. He was puzzled. Then Evan said not to be foolish and move on. Then they try to move but Evan feel pain and sit down and said what to do with this gold? Shall we reburied it ? Then Hooker said that what happen to Evan. He ordered him to take gold out from that place. He took the ends of the collar of the coat in his hands. When Hooker approached Evan, he said not to touch him, put ghe gold back on the coat. But Hooker said he can't do anything. When hooker handled coat, he felt a little prick on the ball of this thumb. He saw it was slender thorn. Then he came to knew that the little thorn is so poisonous and the dots on map represtent it. And the China man had died because of it. And Evan had suffered from two thorn and he also shocked from one thorn. Then he beg to help with loud voice.
In this way the story is ended. End of greed is always destructive and always plan and prepare before going for an expedition is the moral of the story.
