Experimental method to find ฮฑ (pullinger’s apparatus)

Here we know that ฮฑ=  (l1-l2)/l1(ฮธ2-ฮธ1)

The experimental method to determine coefficient of linear expansion is as shown in figure. It consists of steam chamber having three holes for steam inlet, steam outlet and thermometer. An experimental rod is placed vertically at the middle of steam chamber. From the two end of the rod galvanometer circuit is connected. And spherometer is placed at the top of rod. Now pass the steam from steam inlet and record the temperature by thermometer. And the expansion of metal rod is measured by spherometer.

Let,   l1 is the original length of experimental rod.

          ฮธ1 is the original temperature before passing the steam and

          ฮธ2 is the final temperature after passing steam

          R1 is an initial reading of spherometer

          R2 is a final reading of shherometer

Now, from the definition of linear expansion 


This is the value of ฮฑ determine from pullinger’s apparatus.
